Health Canada Appoints Sean McPhee of VOIC to Advisory Committee re Reform of Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating

May 19, 2004 (Toronto, Ontario) – VOIC is pleased to announce that Sean McPhee -- Executive Director of VOIC -- has been asked by Health Canada to advise on the reform of Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating by appointing Sean to its External Advisory Committee.

"I am delighted with my appointment to Health Canada's Advisory Committee," said Mr. McPhee.  "Members of the Vegetable Oil Industry of Canada strongly support the review and updating of the Food Guide to reflect current data regarding healthy eating, emerging scientific opinion and changing demographics in Canada and I am looking forward to working with Health Canada and the other members of the Advisory Committee to ensure changes to the Guide that will benefit everyone."

VOIC is calling on Health Canada to acknowledge and place a greater emphasis in Canada’s Food Guide on (a) promoting consumption of healthy plant-based fats which include liquid vegetable oils such as canola, soy, sunflower, corn, olive and peanut and (b) the inclusion of additional foods high in calcium such as fortified soy beverage and fortified margarine, a product that should be available to consumers.  

VOIC (Vegetable Oil Industry of Canada) is an industry group representing 75,000 oilseed growers across Canada, oilseed processors and suppliers of fats and oils to the food industry, and makers of oilseed-based food products, such as margarine, cooking oil, salad dressing, mayonnaise and dessert toppings.  Members include the Canadian Canola Growers Association, the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association, Archer Daniel Midland Agri-Industries Ltd., Bunge Canada, Canbra Foods, Cargill Limited, AarhusKarlshamn US and Canada, Loders Croklaan, Unilever Canada and Rich Products Corporation.
